Greenmount Extension
Japandi Inspired Home ● Residential Design
Designed by Matt Burleigh ● Construction Underway
The Greenmount Extension is a compact, carefully considered project by Cynosure Architecture for a young family in Perth’s hills. Located within a BAL-FZ zone, the 30sqm addition balances strict bushfire compliance with wellness-focused design—creating new bathroom and yoga spaces that open onto a central courtyard. Inspired by Japandi principles, the design pairs simple, tactile forms with a warm, refined palette to offer calm and clarity in a high-risk bushfire setting.
Located in the hills of Perth, the Greenmount Extension is a modest yet deeply intentional addition to an existing home, designed to meet the demands of a BAL-FZ site while prioritising wellness, performance, and calm. The 30sqm extension introduces a new bathroom and yoga space, both opening onto an internal courtyard to draw in light, improve natural ventilation, and create a stronger connection to nature. This indoor-outdoor flow was especially important for the family’s young daughter, whose asthma informed a design approach focused on clean air, natural materials, and breathable space.
Inspired by Japandi design principles, the extension merges soft, warm timber detailing with a darker, almost industrial palette—striking a balance between simplicity and sensory richness. The result is a compact yet serene retreat, where every material and gesture is chosen with purpose. The project also integrates key sustainability strategies, including solar panels and rainwater collection, making it not only a bushfire-compliant design, but a resilient and responsive one—offering a clear example of how thoughtful architecture can thrive even in the most challenging bushfire-prone zones of Western Australia.
THE EXISTING RESIDENCE
THE PROPOSED DESIGN
Though small in scale, the Greenmount Extension is a study in balance—between performance and comfort, compliance and calm, protection and peace. Designed for a BAL-FZ site in Perth’s eastern hills, the project navigates the challenges of bushfire home design in Western Australia while creating a restorative space for a young family. Every decision—from the fire-resistant material selections to the internal courtyard connection—was guided by wellness, durability, and simplicity. Built by the owners themselves, this project reflects a deeply personal approach to resilient, wellness-driven living.
