Cowaramup Residence
Raw Minimalist Home ● Residential Design
Designed by Matt Burleigh ● Feasibility Phase
The Cowaramup Residence was a feasibility concept by Cynosure Architecture, designed for a potential owner-build in the Parkwater Estate. The proposal explored a contemporary rural home defined by raw, honest materiality and strong, simple forms—balancing buildability with thoughtful spatial flow and a connection to outdoor living.
Located in the Parkwater Estate, the Cowaramup Residence was envisioned as a contemporary rural home for a young family looking to owner-build. This feasibility concept proposed a two-storey design that embraced raw, cost-effective materials and a strong, modern Australian aesthetic. A face brick ground floor paired with a timber-framed, Axon-clad upper level offered both durability and warmth, while exposed LVL joists and a rear Colorbond extension created generous, open living spaces connected to the landscape. Though the project did not proceed, it remains a considered exploration of simple forms and buildable design with a focus on material honesty.
Timber accents were envisioned to bring warmth and cohesion to the interiors, offering a tactile counterpoint to the exposed brickwork, painted surfaces, and the clean, simple lines of this rural home concept.
While never built, the Cowaramup Residence was a study in balance—between raw simplicity and thoughtful planning, economy and expression, function and ease. Designed as a concept for an owner-built rural home, it explored how honest materials and modest construction techniques could come together to create a warm, livable space. Every element—from the exposed LVL joists to the mixed-material façade—was considered with buildability, cost, and connection to place in mind.
